Age-related macular degeneration is a type of vision loss that affects your central vision due to the deterioration of your retina. There is no cure but there are treatments that help to preserve your vision for as long as possible.
Horizon Eye Centre’s lead surgeon, Dr Frances Kearney, performed the first stem cell treatment for macular degeneration in Australia (and the second in the world).

About age-related macular degeneration

The macular is the part of your retina that enables clear vision in your direct line of sight. When the macular deteriorates, you may experience changes in your central field of vision and find yourself relying on your peripheral vision more often.

Unfortunately, we can’t yet cure AMD but we can slow its progression. Your treatment depends on individual factors including the type and severity of the condition and your general health.

Treatment of dry AMD

Currently, there is no effective treatment available to reverse the effects of the dry form of AMD. However, you should discuss diet, supplements and lifestyle options with your health professional.
