When Dr Frances Kearney decided to become an eye surgeon over 20 years ago, she had one unwavering goal: improve people’s life with better vison.
Dr Kearney’s uncompromising approach and desire to obtain greatness when it came to patient care and treatment saw Dr Kearney accepted into some of the world’s most prestigious hospitals. Now as a long term local on the Gold Coast, Dr Kearney continues with this resolute approach to patient care.
As a comprehensive ophthalmologist/eye surgeon specialist with over 10 years of experience, Dr Kearney performs a wide spectrum of general ophthalmology services. With a special interest in cataract surgery, Dr Kearney is also fellowship trained in medical retina, the treatment of age-related macular degeneration.
As part of a research team into macular degeneration, Dr Kearney was the second person in the world to inject stems cells into the eye – research that continues today to find better ways to improve vision.
Dr Kearney is Australian-trained and obtained a Bachelor of Science followed by a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland. Dr Kearney went on to obtain ophthalmology qualifications in Queensland and has worked in prestigious hospitals in London, England, Edinburgh Scotland, and Australia.
Dr Kearney completed sub-specialty training in the area of Medical Retina at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne where she managed patients with medical retina conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and vein occlusions and performed intra-vitreal injections and laser treatment.
Dr Kearney has authored peer-reviewed papers in highly respected medical journals including Ophthalmology, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and the Medical Journal of Australia.
